Arany János is one of the leading figures in Hungarian literary life. His operas and ballads have been translated into more than 50 languages, and he has translated several of Shakespeare's plays into Hungarian. His masterpiece is the epic poem Toldi. By publishing this poetic novel, Arany became known, valued and considered a great national poet. Toldi is also translated into Romanian by the translator Gelu Păteanu. He was president of the Kisfaludy Society and secretary of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He was born in Salonta in 1817, the tenth child of a poor family. Of the ten brothers, only two survived to adulthood. The poet's birthplace was a simple, modest property tha...t fell into flames when the poet was six years old. The house was renovated in 2008 and at that time, it got its image, which can still be seen today, the thatched roof, the familiar rooms in the old houses of Salonta. An oven was built in the room across the street, as it probably was in Arany's childhood, and the furniture in the house was assembled from contemporary objects. The memorial house in its current form, from 2009, can be visited as an ethnographic museum, housing the utensils and objects used every day, at that time, by the people of Salont. The atmosphere presented perfectly reproduces the model of the houses from the era of the poet Arany János.
