The museum was established in 1970 with the permanent ethnographic exhibition, when was appointed as director C. Câşlaru from the Museum of Oltenia - Craiova. In 1975, also the permanent history department was created. In 1993 the museum got the current name. It presents archaeological collections, illustrating the primitive plant cultivation, pottery and tools belonging to the Sălcuţa and Coţofeni cultures, artefacts from the Geto-Dacian Period. There are also costumes from the Băileşti Plain, carpets, rugs, pottery, and household artefacts.
