The monastery was built in 1817 by several Gorj boyars on the place of a wooden church. Its frescos were painted by craftsmen of the Painting School of Târgu-Jiu. In 1990 a new church was built, and during the interwar period further cells appeared. Here was organized a religious art and rare books exhibition. The monastery is a historic and architectonic monument. The collection includes wooden icons, rare books, religious art items, and fresco painting.
