At first the museum was established as part of the Ethnography Department of the University of Jassy by Ion Chelcea. Most exhibits are old, often over 100 years. In 1954 the museum moved into the Palace of Culture. The exhibits of the museum illustrate the basic traditional trades: agriculture, viticulture, animal breeding, as well as the secondary occupations, such as: hunting, fishing and bee-keeping. The collection of folk wooden devices (fulling mills, whirlpools, oil presses etc.) is the oldest in the country of its type. On the second floor the exhibition continues with the halls for wood processing, folk pottery and weaving. Of a special interest are the two homestead interiors, from... the Rădăuţi and Jassy areas, as well as the hall for New Year customs, bearing the name of the ethnologist Petru Caraman. The museum ends on the first floor by the collections of rugs and folk costumes from various zones.
